How to get your business cited by Perplexity

TL;DR

Perplexity searches the live web and cites sources on every answer, which makes it the fastest engine to test your AEO work on, even though AI assistants still send only a small share of most sites' traffic. Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and at your CDN, publish pages that answer one buyer question in the first sentence, and check your questions in Perplexity directly, since it shows you exactly who it cited.

How do you get cited by Perplexity?

You get cited by Perplexity by publishing pages that answer a specific buyer question directly, then making sure Perplexity's crawler can reach them. Perplexity searches the live web for almost every query and lists its sources under every answer, so there is no mystery about who it cited. That makes it the fastest engine to test answer engine optimization on.

Keep the prize in proportion, though. Transparent traffic studies put AI referrals well under 1 percent of total site visits: Ahrefs measured 0.17 percent of the average site's visitors across 3,000 sites in February 2025, and Semrush measured 0.14 percent of total traffic across 2025. Within that slice, Ahrefs found ChatGPT sent over half and Perplexity just under a third. The reason to win Perplexity first is not the clicks. It is feedback: because Perplexity fetches live pages, you learn whether a new page earns a citation without waiting for a slower index, and that tells you your structure works.

Think of Perplexity as the leading indicator. If your pages earn citations there, the same pages are well shaped for the engines that take longer to notice them. If the discipline is new to you, our plain-terms guide to what AEO is covers the fundamentals.

How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT and Gemini?

Perplexity retrieves live pages for every answer, while ChatGPT and Gemini decide case by case whether to search at all. ChatGPT often answers from what its model already knows and only browses when the question calls for it, and Gemini grounds some answers with Google Search results. Perplexity is a search product at heart, so citing sources is the default rather than the exception.

That difference changes the work. Getting cited by ChatGPT leans on ranking in a search index and being quotable when the model chooses to browse. Winning Perplexity leans harder on freshness and reachability, because it fetches your actual page at answer time. A stale or blocked page loses to a live one.

Which crawler does Perplexity use, and is your site blocking it?

Perplexity publishes two user agents: PerplexityBot, which builds its search index, and Perplexity-User, which fetches a page on demand when a user's question calls for it. PerplexityBot respects robots.txt, so the first check is a one-minute read of yourdomain.com/robots.txt for any disallow rule that catches it. Inherited rules from an old developer or plugin are the usual culprit. The same documentation says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt because a person asked for the page, so robots.txt governs the index, not every fetch.

A clean robots.txt is not the whole story. CDNs and firewalls can block bots at the network layer no matter what robots.txt says, and this is about to get more common. Cloudflare changes its defaults on 15 September 2026: for new domains, bots it classifies as Training or Agent are blocked by default on pages that display ads, while Search crawlers stay allowed, and owners can opt out in their Security settings before then. Cloudflare's Agent category covers bots fetching in real time on a person's behalf, and its example, ChatGPT-User, is the same kind of fetcher as Perplexity-User. If your site sits behind Cloudflare and nobody has looked at the bot settings, assume nothing.

Two quick tests settle it. Request one of your pages with PerplexityBot's user agent string and see whether you get a 403, since a block proves the problem even though a clean response does not prove access. Then check your server or CDN logs for PerplexityBot visits over the past month, and if the bot never appears, dig into your CDN's bot settings before assuming Perplexity ignored you.

What kinds of pages does Perplexity quote most often?

Perplexity most often quotes pages that resolve one question quickly and visibly. In practice that means the answer sits in the first sentence or two under a heading phrased the way people ask, the page carries a visible date, and the paragraphs are short enough to lift whole. Definition pages, comparisons, pricing explainers, and step-by-step guides all fit that shape.

Because Perplexity fetches live, recency counts for more than it does elsewhere. A page updated this quarter, with a date that says so, tends to beat an identical page from two years ago. None of this guarantees a citation. It is simply the profile answer engines reward, and Perplexity rewards it faster than most.

How stable are Perplexity citations month to month?

Not very stable, and you should plan for that. Rand Fishkin of SparkToro found that fewer than one in a hundred repeated prompts return the same list of brands, and that it takes something like a thousand runs to see the same order twice. That study covered ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Overviews rather than Perplexity, but an engine that fetches live pages for every answer has more reasons to vary, not fewer.

So treat any single check as a snapshot, not a verdict. What matters is the trend across dated checks: whether you appear for your questions more often this month than last. This is why CiteRank keeps a dated record of every check: who was named, in what order, which sources were cited, and an excerpt of the answer. A citation you held in June stays on record even if July's answer drops you.

How do you check whether Perplexity cites you today?

Open Perplexity in a fresh session, ask it your buyers' questions, and read the citation list under each answer. Use five to ten real questions, the specific long-tail ones rather than your category name. Note every cited domain, then repeat the round a few days later, because single runs vary.

If your competitors appear and you do not, you now know exactly which questions need an answer-first page. That loop of finding the questions, checking who ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews cite, writing the article, publishing it to WordPress or a webhook, and re-checking is the whole job, and it is what CiteRank does end to end. The manual version above costs nothing except an hour.
